Best-selling author and special operations veteran Jack Stewart makes a strong first entry into the Ryanverse, sending Jack Ryan, Jr. into a high-stakes mission that takes the series in a new direction. Tom Clancy Pressure Depth is the fifteenth installment in Jack Ryan, Jr.’s story. Drawing on his military background, Stewart grounds the novel in Cold War-era technology, technical diving detail, and crisp dialogue. At its center, the story examines the brotherhood of special operations and the risks these teams accept each time they take on a mission.
I give Pressure Depth 4 out of 5 stars. I enjoy novels that teach me something new, and Stewart delivers that here. His experience with diving and military weaponry gives the story vivid technical detail without slowing the pace. Still, Pressure Depth feels more like a standalone thriller than a fully integrated Ryanverse installment. Longtime supporting characters appear only sparingly, with major figures such as John Clark and Mary Pat Foley making brief appearances. It also stretches credibility that Jack would take on a mission of this scale without his usual black-side team. The result is an engaging thriller, but one that does not feel as connected to the broader series as it could.
Readers who follow the Ryanverse will likely appreciate this newest installment, even with its looser connection to previous novels. I would also recommend Pressure Depth to fans of Marc Cameron, Brad Thor, William Kent Krueger, and John Sandford. Because the novel includes physical violence and death, readers should consider whether the content is appropriate for their preferences.
