This Month

Rather than simply watching events unfold, we’re gathering clues, forming theories, questioning motives, and trying to stay one step ahead of the final reveal. That interactive element makes the reading experience especially engaging and rewarding.
Part of the genre’s enduring appeal is its ability to balance comfort and suspense at the same time. Readers know they’re embarking on a journey filled with twists, secrets, and rising tension, but there’s also the reassuring promise that the pieces will eventually come together. Even the darkest or most surprising mysteries offer a sense of order in the end. It’s that irresistible combination of uncertainty and resolution that keeps us turning pages—and coming back for more.

This series immediately came to mind when I began selecting books for this month’s challenge. I discovered it last year and was quickly charmed by Angela M. Sanders’ blend of cozy mystery, small-town intrigue, and delightful quirks. With a librarian at the center of the story and a cat who always seems to appear at just the right moment, it’s a series that’s easy to fall in love with.
If you enjoy mysteries where the entire community becomes part of the investigation—or where a feline companion provides the perfect clue at exactly the right time—this series is sure to be a hit. It’s a charming, lighthearted read with just the right amount of mystery to keep the pages turning.
Weekly Reading Challenge: Detective Mystery
This selection was one of the first that came to mind for this month’s prompt. After all, there may be no detective more iconic than Sherlock Holmes. What better way to celebrate the mystery genre than by returning to its roots with Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Holmes adventure?

Weekly Reading Challenge: True Crime
I picked up this book at the 2025 Amelia Island Book Festival and have been waiting for the perfect opportunity to feature it. Written by George Dekle, the lead prosecutor in Ted Bundy’s 1980 Orlando murder trial, this true-crime account offers a firsthand look at the painstaking work required to build a case against one of America’s most notorious serial killers. Dekle takes readers behind the scenes of the investigation and prosecution, detailing the strategy, evidence, and determination that ultimately secured a conviction and death sentence.
If you’re interested in the history of criminal investigations and want a deeper understanding of how prosecutors built cases before the advent of DNA technology, this is a fascinating and compelling read. It’s a gripping reminder of the meticulous detective work and courtroom skill that helped bring dangerous offenders to justice.
Weekly Reading Challenge: By a Female Author
This is another gem I discovered at the 2025 Amelia Island Book Festival. After hearing Kahler discuss the book on the featured authors stage, it immediately became a must-buy. The depth of research behind this story is remarkable, bringing to life a little-known chapter of history with vivid detail and compelling storytelling.
Part true crime and part historical nonfiction, this fascinating account transports readers to an isolated utopian community on a Galápagos island in the years leading up to World War II. What begins as an idealistic experiment soon unravels into intrigue, conflict, and a murder that would forever change the group’s fate.
If you enjoyed Ron Howard’s Eden, which was inspired by these same events, this book offers the opportunity to dig deeper and uncover the full story behind the headlines. It’s a captivating blend of history, mystery, and true crime that is sure to spark discussion long after the final page.
