This Week

Realistic fiction resonates because it reflects the complexities of everyday life. These are stories rooted in recognizable relationships, authentic emotions, and the moments—both large and small—that shape who we become. Family dynamics, friendship, identity, love, regret, hope, and personal growth all take center stage, creating narratives that feel deeply human and profoundly relatable. Rather than asking readers to solve elaborate puzzles or unravel intricate worlds, realistic fiction invites us to connect, empathize, and see pieces of ourselves in the characters on the page. The magic lies in that spark of recognition: I know this person. I’ve felt this tension. I’ve carried this hope, this longing, this uncertainty.
This week’s Favorite Author prompt adds an even more personal dimension to the conversation. Readers don’t just fall in love with individual books—they develop lasting relationships with the authors whose voices feel like home. It’s a prompt that naturally inspires discussions about comfort reads, auto-buy authors, beloved backlists, memorable rereads, and the special kind of trust that develops when a writer consistently delivers stories that resonate. After all, every reader has at least one author who inspires the highest compliment imaginable: I’d read their grocery list.
For me, authors who embody this prompt include Ann Patchett, Fredrik Backman, Celeste Ng, Terah Shelton Harris, Nicholas Ponticello, Marc Cameron, and William Kent Krueger. Their work captures the emotional depth, rich characterization, and sense of connection that make realistic fiction so enduring. Looking further back, the tradition is equally strong in the works of literary giants such as George Eliot, Edith Wharton, and Mark Twain, whose keen observations of human nature continue to resonate with readers today.
Monthly Reading Challenge: Realistic Fiction
Weekly Reading Challenge: Favorite Author

Several years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Terah Shelton Harris at the Atlanta History Center to honor the launch of her innaguaral release One Summer in Savannah. The topic felt heavy and I chose to follow her suggestion to wait before I read this one. But, even without reading a single page of the book, this author made a huge impression on me, leading me to jump at the chance to read her next two novels as soon as they were available and adding her to my “automatic purchase” list.
If Terah Shelton Harris is one of your favorite authors, One Summer in Savannah is such a strong fit for this prompt because it delivers the kind of emotionally rich, character-centered story that makes a favorite author feel like an automatic one-click pick.
If you’re looking for other great books for this prompt, try one of these reads recommended by our StoryGraph community:
- Book Lovers, Emily Henry
- How to be Okay When Nothing is Okay, Jenny Lawson
- Mad Honey, Jennifer Finney Boylan & Jodi Picoult

New This week
We have two Most Anticipated books hitting shelves this week – if you like gothic family suspense, you will not be disappointed this week!

Kelsey Cox is back with her sophomore release Pretty Dead Things following multiple generations of women and a community rocked by drama. I loved her first book and this was no different!
This is a dark, atmospheric thriller that weaves together multiple generations of women against the backdrop of a community fractured by long-buried secrets and lingering heartbreak. Blending psychological suspense with small-town drama, Cox masterfully explores the ways the past echoes through families and friendships, shaping the present in unexpected and often devastating ways.
Set in Texas and steeped in simmering tension, old rivalries, buried trauma, and a disappearance that refuses to stay forgotten, the novel delivers an irresistible sense of unease from the very first page. With richly drawn characters, a haunting setting, and twists that unfold at exactly the right pace, Pretty Dead Things is the kind of moody, character-driven thriller that lingers long after the final chapter.

Adding to the gothic family drama this week is Isabella Valeri’s The Prodical Daughter, the highly anticipated second installment in her captivating gothic suspense series. If you’re drawn to stories steeped in family secrets, simmering tensions, and atmospheric settings, this is one you’ll want on your radar. I was immediately pulled in by the combination of mystery, suspense, and sharp, witty dialogue, which kept me eagerly turning pages from beginning to end.
Valeri delivers a compelling blend of gothic family intrigue, old-world glamour, and high-stakes drama. The story follows a young woman who is summoned back to her influential family’s secluded Alpine estate, where long-buried secrets, dangerous expectations, and complicated loyalties await. As she navigates the pressures of family legacy and the seductive pull of the past, she is forced to confront truths that threaten to upend everything she thought she knew.
Rich in atmosphere and tension, the novel evokes the grandeur and isolation of a world where power and privilege come at a steep cost. Valeri masterfully layers mystery and emotion throughout the narrative, creating a story that feels both sweeping and intimate. With its intriguing cast of characters, dark family dynamics, and irresistible sense of foreboding, The Prodigal Daughter is a standout read for fans of gothic fiction, multi-generational family drama, and suspenseful storytelling.
In Case You Missed It
Last Week’s Prompt

A flash mob? What was Sam thinking? Her boss is asking the same question out loud as he puts her on leave while the situation is “discussed.” Everything had been going so well: she had found the perfect guy, was planning the perfect wedding, and loved her job. Then the flash mob fiasco derailed it all. Maybe time away at her parents’ Long Island beach house is exactly what she needs to decompress and reconnect with what really matters: her fiancé, her family, and the heartthrob next door who just happens to be her first love.
Annabel Monaghan has made a name for herself in the beach-read category with bestselling novels like Summer Romance and Nora Goes Off Script. Same Time Next Summer slides neatly onto that shelf as well. Centered on a professional young woman at the edge of a promising career, the novel asks whether perfect is really worth it—or whether messy might be better. It is relationship-driven without feeling overly dense, making it a natural fit for a beach-read challenge prompt.
I give Same Time Next Summer 4.25 out of 5 stars. On the surface, it is breezy and escapist, but underneath are complex layers of emotion and turmoil. The novel offers romance and family drama, along with a bit of mystery as the story unfolds. I thought I had figured out a few of the twists along the way, only to be proven wrong. It has the feel of a more mature version of The Summer I Turned Pretty.
If you’re a fan of Abby Jimenez, Emily Henry, Ashley Poston, or Carley Fortune, Same Time Next Summer should be next up in your beach bag this summer.

Last Week’s Preview

I give Brighter Than Before 5 out of 5 stars. This charming summer rom-com is filled with witty banter, lovable characters, and the heartfelt second-chance energy Courtney Walsh writes so well. When Claire moves to Chicago hoping to leave her mistakes and heartbreak behind, her fresh start quickly becomes more complicated—and far more memorable—than she expected. A delivery mishap, an awkward run across the courtyard, and an unforgettable first encounter with a handsome neighbor give readers a hilarious glimpse into the story’s playful meet-cute energy.
Claire’s new life in Chicago brings plenty of humor, awkward moments, emotional warmth, and a supporting cast that makes the story feel lively and full of community. Funny, sincere, and easy to recommend, this is a perfect pick for vacation reading, book clubs, and fans of contemporary romance with strong community ties. Walsh balances the lightness of a memorable meet-cute with the emotional pull of characters learning how to heal, rebuild, and open themselves to something brighter than before.
