Summer reading invites us to slow down—savoring beach reads, lingering over favorite authors, and falling back in love with the stories that stay with us. This month, I’m taking you on a walk through some of my favorite corners of realistic fiction. From stories that celebrate representation to ones that trace characters finding themselves on the page, these picks will pull at your heartstrings and make you laugh—sometimes all at once, within the same cover.

Realistic fiction thrives on its closeness to our everyday lives, while still delivering the emotion, tension, and depth we crave in a great story. It invites us to look more closely at familiar experiences—relationships, family dynamics, identity, grief, love, growing up, and community—in ways that feel immediate and deeply recognizable. That sense of familiarity makes these stories not only easy to connect with, but easy to carry into conversation long after the final page.
At its heart, realistic fiction reminds us that you don’t need dragons, murders, or dystopian worlds to be completely captivated. Real life is already messy, moving, complicated, and full of drama. These books offer a mirror—helping readers see themselves, the people around them, and the world they inhabit with greater clarity and understanding. Lately, I’ve been exploring recommendations from our StoryGraph community, and I have to say—their picks are absolutely worth the messy moments:
- Broke Parts Included, Alyson Root
- The Dictionary of Lost Words, Pip Williams
- The Guncle, Steven Rowley
- How to Read a Book, Monica Wood
- Interesting Facts About Space, Emily Austin
- Mad Honey, Jodi Picoult & Jennifer Finney Boylan
- Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Rufi Thorpe
- Monday’s Not Coming, Tiffany D. Jackson
- My Sister’s Keeper, Jodi Picoult
- Nineteen Minutes, Jodi Picoult
- On Location, Sarah Echavarre Smith
- Over Yonger, Sean Dietrich
- Summers at the Saint, Mary Kay Andrews
Realistic fiction is a natural fit for this month’s reading prompts because it so seamlessly intersects with the stories readers already gravitate toward: the easy escape of a perfect beach read, the comfort of returning to a favorite author, the intimacy and representation found in LGBTQ+ narratives, the emotional growth at the heart of coming-of-age stories, and even the family tension, vivid sense of place, and quiet secrets that shape Southern Gothic. More than almost any other genre, realistic fiction reminds us that ordinary lives can be just as compelling, dramatic, and unforgettable as any high-concept plot.
Our playlist this month might be our best yet—it’s certainly the longest, coming in at 2.5 hours. I’ve had it on repeat while writing this week, and it hasn’t missed once. It captures so many of the moods realistic fiction does best: nostalgic, warm, reflective, hopeful, a little bittersweet, and deeply rooted in place. With a mix of beachy classics, sun-soaked pop, soulful Southern tracks, and a few tender, introspective songs, it builds an atmosphere that makes reading feel even more immersive—like stepping fully into a story’s emotional landscape rather than simply turning pages.
And, as a fun bonus, I snuck in several of my personal favorites. Since July is my birthday month, it only felt right to make sure a few of my go-to songs were part of the journey.
