The Story Keeper

Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Audio for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Fiona’s childhood home has sat empty for a decade since her uncle’s death, a silence that has only fueled the ghost stories whispered around town. Returning after her divorce, she has one goal: renovate the house and bring it into the modern era. But when strange occurrences begin to unfold and she discovers a mysterious collection of books by an author no one seems to recognize, long‑buried family tensions rise to the surface. The question becomes whether the house will be her undoing—or the key to uncovering secrets hidden beneath its roof.

The bestselling author of The Paris Agent and The German Wife returns with a sweeping dual‑timeline novel that blends family drama, mystery, and rich historical detail. In The Story Keeper, Kelly Rimmer explores the meaning of family—both the one we’re born into and the one we choose. With vivid descriptions of the Australian landscape, a compelling “story within a story,” and a heartfelt journey toward redemption, this novel offers flawed yet deeply lovable characters and an emotional arc that will resonate with historical fiction and family‑drama readers alike.

I’m giving The Story Keeper a full 5 out of 5 stars. I often struggle with the book‑within‑a‑book structure, but Rimmer executes it beautifully here. It was also a delight to see her set a story in her native Australia, and the scenes in and around Fiona’s family property are so immersive that I felt as though I were walking alongside the characters. I listened to the audiobook edition and found the narration and pacing excellent—engaging, steady, and easy to follow.

Fans of Rimmer’s previous novels will find plenty to love in this one. Due to scenes involving domestic violence and murder, I’d recommend it for readers 16 and older. It’s a perfect pick for those who enjoyed Tea Cooper’s The Butterfly Collector or Sue Williams’ The Governor, His Wife, and His Mistress—historical fiction at its finest

The Story Keeper will release on July 21st.  You can preorder your copy today on our Bookshop.org page!
