The weather is warming up, the sun is out, and tomorrow is Earth Day, so it’s a perfect time to talk about books about nature, which is our theme this week for the reading challenge! Books about animals, landmarks, plants, migration patterns, the ocean – they are all great for this theme!
Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:
RWL Reading Challenge – Week 17: About Nature
My First Summer in the Sierra
by John Muir
Posting on Monday, April 22nd
John Muir is the father of our National Park system and one of my favorite naturalist! He is the source of so many of my favorite quotes about nature, but this is the first of his books I’ve read. If you like National Geographic or iMax films about nature, you’re going to love this one!
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: Remarkably Bright Creatures, Shelby Van Pelt
- General Fiction: Latitudes of Longing, Shubhangi Swarup
- Romance: With Every Great Breath, Rick Bass
- Thriller: Annihilation, Jeff VanderMeer
- Nonfiction: Fuzz, Mary Roach
- Kids: Outside Your Window, Terri Kelley & Josefina Tecson
Upcoming Book Festivals

I have enjoyed so many book festivals and author events lately! We’ll be looking ahead to some great upcoming festivals in the next few months!
US States Challenge – Week 17: Kentucky
Horse
by Geraldine Brooks
Posting on Thursday, April 25th
This book is a great fit for both our state prompt and our weekly prompt! With dualling timelines of both the 1860’s and present day, this one looked like a great recounting of how horse racing got it’s start, and the inner workings of museum collections. However, the final few chapters of the book left me disappointed in this read. I’m interested to hear your thoughts if you’ve already read it?
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: Beloved, Toni Morrison
- General Fiction: All the Forgivenesses, Elizabeth Hardinger
- Romance: The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, Kim Michele Richardson
- Thriller: First Blood, David Morrell
- Nonfiction: Trapped! The Story of Floyd Collins, Roger W Brucker & Robert K Murray
- Kids: Lift Your Light a Little Higher, Heather Henson & Bryan Collier
