Gung Ho!

What if I told you there are three simple principles that could help you turn a bland workforce into one Gung Ho! for work?  That is exactly what Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles are showing readers in their book.  Following the true story of a worst-to-first division of a major corporation, the authors show how to inspire your team and improve performance through The Spirit of the Squirrel, The Way of the Beaver, and The Gift of the Goose.

I give Gung Ho! 5 out of 5 stars. This is actually not the first time I’ve read this book.  I tend to read it every few years, especially when I shift into a new role at work.  I have used these concepts with previous teams to turn them from burned out to enthusiastic for their work.  I implemented The Spirit of the Squirrel with my teams 2 weeks ago and have already noted a difference!  This is a quick read and easy to understand for readers at all levels with wonderful real-life examples and narratives.

I would direct this book to readers new to management or team leadership, regardless of the industry.  This is a great book for leaders with teams who need a little motivation, and those already doing well.  I would also recommend this book for readers not yet in management – it’s a great read to show how our own attitude and actions can impact the team culture.

I chose Gung Ho! as my nonfiction read for April.  I’ve been leading my new teams for a few months now and it’s a great time to start working on our team culture.  We started working on our efficiency, but this book puts team values and respect amongst the teammates first and foremost as you build your team.  I’m looking forward to seeing how my teams adapt to The Way of the Beaver and The Gift of the Goose!
