Flowers on Main

Bree left Chicago and her failing career as a playwright to move back home to Chesapeake Shores, but never anticipated the drama would follow.  Between run ins with her ex, the town heartthrob, and opening her new flower shop, Bree seems to be the center of all the town gossip.  Will they be able to move past their breakup and work together on her new shop Flowers on Main, or will they crash and burn again?

Flowers on Main is the second book in the Chesapeake Shores series from romance and mystery writer Sherryl Woods.  Woods’ novels have been made into TV series a few times with both this series and the Sweet Magnolias books hitting the small screens on Hallmark and Netflix respectively.  Woods builds realistic relationships and interactions between her characters and delivers witty dialogue perfect for the screen.  This book is all about repairing the damage of past mistakes and learning to follow your heart in everything you do.

I give Flowers on Main 4 out of 5 starsI am a huge fan of Woods’ work and this book was great, but it was nothing extraordinary.  It definitely hits the “Hallmark Movie” classification in the Style category, but one reason I love Woods’ work are the great characters.  The author has a way of building backstories in an organic way that pulls readers in and leaves us wanting more of these characters.  I really enjoyed the sibling rivalry and discourse between the various families, as well as the realistic look at broken relationships and coparenting.

I would recommend this book for readers who love small-town romance novels and comeback stories.  If you’ve loved watching Woods’ work on TV, reading the book is even better!  With some steamy scenes, including an underage make out sessions, this book would be best directed to more mature audiences over 13.  There is one robbery scene that includes a firearm that may be triggering for some readers, and some other minimal inclusions of violence as well.

I chose Flowers on Main for the Read With Lindsey reading challenge prompt “flower themed”.  I have wanted to read Sherryl Woods’ novels since I first watched Sweet Magnolias a few years ago but haven’t had the opportunity.  I couldn’t think of a better choice for this prompt than a book about a flower shop!  While this is the second book in the series, it can definitely be a standalone read.  However, I’ll be going back to read book one very soon!
