I am excited for today’s New Release Tuesday books! There’s a great selection of memoirs, historical fiction, and FOUR new releases from Sandra Boynton! One of our Most Anticipated Releases of 2023 comes out today, too! What are you picking up today? Don’t forget – each link below will take you to our Bookshop.org page where you can grab your own copy and support independent bookstores nationwide!
Farrell Covington and the Limits of Style by Paul Rudnick – this beautiful story of two gay men over the course of several decades blends fiction with key events in history in a stunning way! From the free love of gay life in Manhattan in the 70’s to the LGBTQ+ movement of the 2020’s. This novel also explores the power dynamic and social requirements when one partner is from a very rich and prominent family and the other…well…isn’t.
First Family: George Washington’s Heirs and the Making of America by Cassandra Good – this new release by one of my favorite historians follows George Washington’s very outspoken step-grandchildren and the roles they played in nearly every political movement all the way to the American Civil War. Similar to the Trump era recently, the Custis grandchildren used their tangential relationship with Washington to secure political favor and power in a time when America was still figuring out how to work as a democracy.
My Friend Anne Frank by Hannah Pick-Goslar – this much awaited memoir sheds new light and reality on a story many of us only read about in school – Anne Frank and her family’s demise under Nazi rule. Hannah was a childhood friend and neighbor of the Frank family. Her memoir tells first-hand accounts of her time with the Franks and watching classmates disappear one by one, along with her own family’s imprisonment in a concentration camp. I haven’t read much from the perspective of a child during Nazi occupation and the Holocaust – this one is in my basket today!
My Magnolia Summer by Victoria Benton Frank – When Maggie has to head from NYC back to her hometown on Sullivan’s Island, SC, she starts to feel her life changing. With the impending loss of the family matriarch and family drama, Maggie has to find herself again to help right her family’s course. This is sure to be a best seller this summer with all the hallmarks of a great beach read!
The Boy Who Reached for the Stars: A Memoir by Elio Morillo – Morillo is a NASA trained engineer known as the “space mechanic”. His journey to get to space has been a long and complicated road though. From a childhood in Ecuador, to immigrating to the US, to fighting an uphill battle of a subpar education system and lack of access for underprivileged, Morillo has fought to live out his dream. Now he is a leading engineer showing how AI, robotics, and more will help us develop a better space program.
The Little Italian Hotel by Phaedra Patrick – let’s hear it for the cover artist on this one! The gorgeous cover was the first thing that caught my attention and led to its inclusion today. From the author of The Messy Lives of Book People, this new novel follows a relationship expert’s journey to Italy after her own marriage falls apart.
The Paris Daughter by Kristin Harmel – this is one of our Most Anticipated Releases of 2023! I posted a full review of this one on the blog over the weekend – you can read it here. This is a 5 star book and a sure fan favorite for historical fiction lovers!
Kids’ Books releasing today
Dragon Ball Super, Vol 18 by Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou – confession time…I am not a huge fan of Manga or graphic novels, but I live in house surrounded by people who are! My 7 year old and husband love both, so this one is right up their alley – Goku has collected all 7 dragon balls…and now his life is a bit boring. But a new threat emerges and brings a huge battle!
A Delicious Story by Barney Saltzberg – Little Mouse wants to read a story…but Big Mouse has a secret – he ate the story!! This funny story will entertain your littlest readers as they discover how to improvise a story.
We are Going to be Pals! by Mark Teague – This is another book that caught my attention with a cover. It has my favorite animal on the cover – a rhinoceros! Egret is teaching Rhinoceros how to be a good friend – they eat lunch together, help each other out, but also learn to respect the other’s boundaries. If you have a little one starting Kindergarten in the fall, or struggling with friendship, this book might be a great way to start a conversation about what it means to value your friends and be a good friend back.
