The first New Release Tuesday of the year brings so many great books! What are you picking up today?
Code Name Blue Wren by Jim Popkin – I have been looking forward to this book since I first heard about it last month! Based on the true story of Anna Montes, this biography of a Pentagon analyst turned Cuban spy details a life that should have been much different. The Montes family all work for the government’s alphabet agencies and never had a clue what Anna was doing. Anna Montes will be released from jail this month after 20 years behind bars. Written by an investigative journalist, this book uncovers the truth about the betrayal and provides a glimpse into the double life Anna led.
My Selma by Willie Mae Brown – Willie Mae Brown grew up in Selma during the height of what made her small town famous – Civil Rights protests in the 1960’s. Brown recounts life from a 12-year-old’s perspective and is a great way to connect with what daily life held for kids in that era. If you’re interested in audiobooks, I would suggest the Audible version of this one, as read by Brown.
Rhinos at Recess by Mary Pope Osborne – I love rhinos! They are my favorite zoo animal! This is book 37 in the Magic Treehouse series. Two kids at recess go to visit the Magic Treehouse and are transported to a wildlife sanctuary in Africa to help protect a rhino from poachers. The Magic Treehouse series is a great way to open the door to the world for our kids!
The Last Stand by Nathaniel Philbrick – this book has been on the market for a while, but a new paperback edition is being released today. Philbrick is one of my favorite historical writers. The research and detail he puts into his works show the passion he has for documenting the past for generations to come. This book is a must for anyone looking to find the truth behind one of the most infamous battles in American history.
When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller – this is another paperback edition release of a book already on the market. Winner of the 2021 Newberry Medal among other accolades, this book is based on a Korean folk tale. Does Lily have what it takes to face a magic tiger? This is a great book for your elementary and middle school students, complete with family relationships and life stories.
