Thank you NetGalley and St .Martin’s Press for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
The tomb of Tutankhamun has long been the center of attention in the Valley of the Kings but for one group of archaeologists, that was not the end goal for their explorations. However, that’s exactly what Lord Carnarvon and his team stumbled on in their last excavation in 1922. Playing an integral role in these excavations was Lady Evelyn, Carnarvon’s daughter, who had studied the pharaohs her entire life with special attention to Hatshepsut – the most powerful woman in Egyptian history. However, as their works uncovered the riches contained in Tutankhamun’s tomb, Egyptian independence from Brittain threatened the political agreements around the digs and the personal safety of the Carnarvon expedition. Will they all return safely to England, or will this dig put them in financial and legal danger?
Beloved historical fiction writer Marie Benedict’s latest release takes readers on a journey to Egypt in dualling timelines. Daughter of Egypt showcases Benedict’s signature style of pulling little-known women from behind the scenes of history’s biggest moments and setting them in the spotlight. This book shows the struggles women have faced throughout history both in Hatshepsut’s quest to achieve and retain power and in Lady Evelyn’s desire to map out her own journey in the world. This is a story about finding strength to stand up to those who want to control you simply because you are female.

I give Daughter of Egypt 5 out of 5 stars. I loved the dual timelines that both took us back in time. I really enjoyed how the struggles each woman faced paralleled each other well. I have always been fascinated by archaeology and Egyptian history, so this book drew me in quickly. It was interesting to think of these digs in relation to world events like World War I and the Egyptian Independence. I appreciated the view into life in England during this period as well, where the aristocracy was trying to return to pre-war life with mixed results. This was a fantastic read I did not want to put down!
This is a great book for readers who, like me, enjoy historical fiction. With the scenes in England, readers who loved the Downton Abbey series will enjoy this book. I would also recommend this to readers who are interested in Egyptian history, or loved any of Benedict’s other works – although, this might be her best yet!
Daughter of Egypt will release on March 24th. Preorder yours today on our Bookshop.org page!
