January Top Books

January’s reading challenge brought me to so many genres I would not have read otherwise. Some were more difficult than others for me to read, but I’m glad I read them. How did you fare with these prompts?

When looking over the list of books I read this month, I was not surprised in the least that my top books were upcoming releases – I had quite a few spectacular books from the publishers this month! Here’s the full breakdown on how these books stacked up:

5 Stars

4 Stars

3 Stars

  • Dawn, Octavia Butler
  • The Last Hour Between Worlds, Melissa Caruso

2 Stars

  • Everfair, Nisi Shawl

Top Read of January

We had three fantastic 5-star books this month! Each of these books is set to come out in a few weeks and I know you will love them each for different reasons. The Dark Lord’s Guide to Dating (and Other War Crimes) delivers a snarky, grumpy-sunshine romance with some very steamy scenes. Daughter of Egypt shows the author’s signature take on powerful women of history you have probably never heard of. The Red Winter is that dark fairytale retelling perfect for fantasy romance lovers.

With that said, there was truly only one perfect 5-star book this month. The other two were close but only achieved 4.95 out of 5 stars. Our winner had me laughing throughout, even the suspenseful parts. But more than anything, it left me wanting a Dark Lord of my own to sweep me off my feet, teach me how to use my hidden powers, and take me behind closed doors! This was the first book by Tiffany Hunt that I’ve had the pleasure to read, but The Dark Lord’s Guide to Dating (and Other War Crimes) will not be my last!

Next Month

After one of my least favorite genres, we are swapping to one of my favorites – romance! I’ve especially loved sports-themed romances the past few years, and I’ll be reading one by a favorite author this month! There’s also nothing better than a meet-cute with a pet, so I included that, too. We are also honoring Black History Month by reading a romance by an author of color. Are there any prompts you’d add to the Romance category?

I invite you over to our StoryGraph reading challenges where you can follow along, check off the prompts, and see what the rest of our community is choosing for these challenges. Don’t forget you can also follow along on our social media pages like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Pinterest to continue the conversation!

A few sponsored books I’m reading this month:

  • Last Bite, Amy S. Peele
  • El Paso, Jazmine Ulloa
  • Without a Clue, Melissa Ferguson
  • The Ruler, Penelope Sky

I can’t wait to read these great books with you – keep an eye out for the weekly previews on Sundays for what I’m reviewing each week!
