January Theme: Science Fiction

We have left the color themes behind and are deep into our first genre theme – Science Fiction! I have to tell you – as much as I loved reading the rainbow last year, I really have loved digging deeper into this genre and exploring some subgenres I wouldn’t have otherwise picked up. How is this working out for you?

I don’t tend to read a lot of Science Fiction and we haven’t had many reviews at Read With Lindsey. Instead, let me share with you some of the top books added to our StoryGraph challenges so far for the categories:

  • Prime Meridian, Silvia Moreno-Garcia
  • Critical Mass, Daniel Suarez
  • Binti, Nnedi Okorafor
  • Leviathan, Scott Westerfeld
  • Divergent, Veronica Roth
  • The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins
  • The War of the Worlds, HG Wells

What would you add in? This genre has some interesting subgenres like steampunk and space travel, and some I’d never heard of before setting up the challenge, like Afrofuturism. That’s one thing I love about challenges like these – they open my mind to things I never would have read otherwise!

When I think of Science Fiction, the first thing that comes to mind is Star Trek, followed closely by Guardians of the Galaxy. While I may not read a lot of books in this genre, it’s been one of my favorites at the movies! I did try to stay away from movie theme songs for our playlist this month. At just under 90 minutes long, this is the perfect soundtrack for a longer reading session to help you slip away to the stars!
