Celebrating a Bookish Christmas

Christmas traditions in our house have taken a bookish turn the past few years – from gifts to decor to activities, they all seem to have a very book-themed vibe. I’m sharing a few of our favorites with you today.

We’ve shared a lot of gift ideas over the years that would be great for the reader in your life at Christmas. Today I want to focus on Christmas-themed bookish gifts like…

This adorable book tree ornament. We have something similar on our tree – this one is available on Etsy for around $20. There’s also this one that can be personalized and this one with personalization and a snow globe feature!

One of my guilty pleasures is having a different coffee mug for every season/holiday. I am in love with this Etsy shop’s multiple Christmas designs available for under $20 with color and theme personalization. If you’re an ice coffee fan, check out this one for under $15.

This time of year is a little chilly where I’m at, so blankets and sweatshirts help to make early morning reading hours cozy! I love this blanket – gingerbread men with books! I’ve already order a couple of these sherpa hoodies as gifts for the holiday season, too!

We’ve always done advent calendars for our kids through the years, but my absolute favorite was the year we did a DIY calendar of books! We made use of our library’s Friends of the Library sale to pick up 24 books for anywhere from $1-5 and wrapped them each individually. We numbered them so that longer books would be unwrapped on Friday or Saturday nights to give more time to read. Our kids had a great time enjoying a different book every night – some we still have on our shelves and read on a regular basis! If you go this route, consider customizing your selections for the child’s favorite topics and reading level with some just a stretch above their level that could be read aloud and kept for months in the future.

We also read some books on repeat this time of year with our kids. Books like The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe are great read alouds for the whole family. We’ve also enjoyed books like The Polar Express and How the Grinch Stole Christmas on repeat during story time, too!

One of the reasons I love this holiday so much is that my library/office becomes Christmas Central in our house! It’s one of the few places with enough room for the Christmas tree, and it has a door to shut the cats out so our tree does not fall victim to their explorations. If you have little ones (or trouble pets), there are other ways to decorate for the holiday though. We’ve set up book trees – stacks of books made to look like trees, strung with lights or ribbon – or wrapped stacks of presents or books to look like snowmen. You can find more inspiration on our Pinterest board Bookish Christmas for your holiday decorations!
