Hearts in Circulation

Thank you NetGalley and Recorded Books for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

In the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, they rode horses to carry books to these far-flung towns and residents.  But today Hailey is setting off for her first day as a traveling librarian in this beat up jalopy of a bookmobile.  She should be thankful – if the mayor hadn’t donated this thing, they would never have gotten the mobile library program off the ground, but it really is a tetanus shot waiting to happen.  She doesn’t even want to think about the last time someone actually popped the hood on it.  She’s just about to pull into her first stop when the vehicle starts giving off an odd noise.  She’s pulling over when the road starts giving off an odd noise – a rock slide!  With no way home, Hailey is hoping someone in town can fix the car and clear the road, but what she finds is so much more.

Sarah Monzon is following up the release of An Overdue Match with her second book in the Checking out Love series – Hearts in Circulation.  With dozens of romance novels to her name, Monzon knows how to weave a story to warm your heart with relatable characters and small town charm.  This book shows the power of meeting people where they and appreciating them for who they are.  This is a book about learning to love yourself through loving others.

I give Hearts in Circulation 4 out of 5 starsThis area of the country is like home to me – the narrow highways and potential rockslides, the people who open their homes to strangers when they are in need.  I appreciated the way Haley saw Levi for who he was the struggles he had in certain situations, and she didn’t try to change him, she would offer ways to help he cope if he wanted them or ways out if he didn’t.  It did feel a little too perfect though – the kittens showing up at just the right moment, the liver match, the way that Levi’s sister’s clothes just happen to be there.  This is the second book I’ve read this week where the love interest was a perfect donor for someone which helped catapult the romance – that just feels like a buy off to me.

The force proximity and small-town charm of this book reminded me of some other great books we’ve read recently like Denise Hunter’s The Second Story Bookshop, Julia London’s Everything is Probably Fine, or Rachel LaBerge’s A Lodge Affair.  If you loved Pride and Prejudice, you should read this – Levi’s character reminded me so much of Mr. Darcy – I kept seeing the scene from the movie where Matthew Macfadyen holds his hand at his side and spreads his fingers out like they have been electrified.  This was a quick and easy read and would make a great weekend book for the holiday weekend!
