This Week: November 2nd

News and Updates

Happy Fall Back Day! When I found out Halloween was going to be followed quickly by an extra hour of sleep, I figured the sugar high induced crash would be all worked out this morning, but no luck so far – mom is still exhausted and the kid still has all the energy in the world! I loved seeing all the costumes and creative Trick or Treat ideas on Instagram though – especially the families giving out books instead of candy!

This Week

We are headed West to the frontier this week and to one of my favorite genres – Westerns. I grew up watching old western TV show reruns and love these books, too!

Reading Challenge: A Western

One of those reruns I enjoyed so much was the show “The Virginian” staring James Drury. The show was loosely based on this novel, but this book is a bit darker. I love westerns because of the rough and tumble way the characters are not just looking to make a way of life on the frontier, but also just trying to stay alive! I am always so mystified how the love stories come to be in these dusty towns!

It’s not just the old reruns that were based on books though – “Longmire” is based on the series by Craig Johnson and “Ransom Canyon” is based on the series by Jodi Thomas!

If you’re looking for other great books for this prompt, try one of these:

  • Any book by Larry McMurtry – my favorite is Lonesome Dove
  • True Grit, Charles Portis
  • Old Yeller, Fred Gipson
  • Little House on the Prairie, Laura Ingalls Wilder

New This week

We don’t have any of our early reads hitting shelves this week, but here’s some great options I have in my preorders you can pick up on Tuesday:

  • Deeper Than the Ocean, Mirta Ojito
  • Fade Into You, Amber Smith & Sam Gellar
  • Heart Life Music, Kenney Chesney
  • We Fell Apart, E. Lockhart

In Case You Missed It

Last Week’s Prompt

Moving is never easy on a kid – friends left behind, learning a new neighborhood, and all your stuff is still in boxes! When her parents didn’t seem to have the time to help Coraline settle in, they told her to go explore on her own and start learning about her new surroundings. What Coraline found was anything but ordinary – a parallel universe with another set of parents that seemed to have all the time in the world for their little girl. Bur Coraline quickly learns that isn’t what she really wanted after all and is desperate to get back to her real family. Will she be able to save herself, or will she be stuck on the other side forever?

Coraline, originally released in 2002, is considered a children’s fantasy/horror book, which seems odd to say. I give the book 4.0 out of 5 stars. It has won wide acclaim and several awards. It is usually brought up this time of year as a good book for the Halloween season for kids and has been made into several film, TV, and stage adaptations. This book would definitely give tiny readers nightmares, especially if they were moving soon, so it might be better for older audiences – 4th grade and above.

Last Week’s Article

I am still thinking about our two 5-star books from October! Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune and Over Yonder by Sean Dietrich are stunning pieces of literature! You can read the full recap of all the books we read last month (and which we chose as our top book of the month!) here. I also shared the reading prompts for November if you haven’t grabbed a copy yet!

Last Week’s Preview

When a night club owner and one of his employees are found murdered on the floor of the establishment, the town is put on edge. Will they catch the killer before it’s too late?

I give Nightswimming by Melanie Anagnos 3.45 out of 5 stars. Written in a noir style, the police procedural shows the darker side of the legal system when those with power do not also have morals, but this was a very tough read for me. You can read the full review here.

Reading Challenge Prompts

Are you reading along with us for November? Here’s the full list of our upcoming weekly prompts. Not up for reading a book every week? That’s ok – we have a once-a-month prompt, too! Our monthly theme for November is Brown – look for a book with a brown cover or brown in the name.
