Florence’s whole world is crashing down around her – the perfect guy she’s been dating just stole her life story for next big book, her publisher gave her an impossible deadline, and her father died. Plus, now she has to travel home to the town that bullied her years ago when she helped solve a crime with a very particular skill – she can talk to ghosts. All she wants is to honor her father and get out of town, but her dad’s last wishes send her on scavenger hunt and straight into the path of very familiar ghost. Will the ghost help her say goodbye to her father, or will this be yet another reason for the town to turn against her?
Best-selling author Ashley Poston delivers a quirky small-town romance with a supernatural twist in The Dead Romantics. Utilizing her own experiences in both publishing and writing, Poston brings relatable characters and a beautiful plot that will keep readers engaged and wanting more. With her signature meet-cute style romance and a heart wrenching story of loss, readers will connect quickly with the main character and cheer for her storyline throughout. This is a story of redemption and of what-ifs.

I give The Dead Romantics 4 out of 5 stars. I wasn’t sure I was going to love this story after the first few chapters – the deadbeat boyfriend stealing her life story, the jerk of a publisher, and the father’s death all felt a little too cliché. However, I’m glad I stuck with it – I couldn’t get over how much I wanted Florence’s storyline to progress and to see her get the guy! This does seem a bit like a made-for-TV story and I could completely see it on Hallmark or a Netflix holiday romance (Halloween!) one day.
If you love stories by Emily Henry, or the TV show Mediums, or even the movie The Lake House, I think you’ll love this book! Romance book clubs would do well choosing this novel – there is so much to unpack with these characters! I’d also recommend Poston’s follow up novel The Seven Year Slip – I haven’t read it yet but it sounds so good!
I chose The Dead Romantics for the Read With Lindsey Reading Challenge prompt “an author you haven’t read before”. I’ve been hearing about this book for quite some time, but hadn’t found the space to read yet. I’m so glad I did though – prompts like this are what have introduced me to some of my favorite authors and this was no different! I have a list of some of my favorite authors on the Sunday weekly preview post. What authors do you think readers should consider if they haven’t heard of them yet?
