So many of my friends have teens starting their senior year of high school in the next few weeks – does that include you? We have been talking about our own memories of those final days of childhood quite a bit lately, so I thought this week would be a great time to explore coming of age novels that celebrate the challenges and the simplicity of those years. Our preview book this week is also a coming-of-age novel of sorts, following a pair of teens through some rough high school drama and then their reconnection years later. What are you reading this week?
Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:

RWL Reading Challenge – Week 34: A Coming of Age Novel
The Fall of Butterflies
by Andrea Portes
Posting on Tuesday, August 19th
I was originally drawn to this book because of its vibrant cover and the reference to butterflies, which I love! This novel felt like another ripped-from-the-headlines story about a boarding school and entitled teens with absent parents. With very short chapters and a compelling narative, this was a quick read for me and I think it would be perfect for these back-to-school days of waiting for kids to be done with their extracurriculars.
Here’s some other great options for this prompt:
- Bestseller: To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee
- General Fiction: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain
- Romance: The Perks of Being a Wildflower, Stephen Chbosky
- Thriller: It, Stephen King
- Nonfiction: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou
Gallop Toward the Sun
by Peter Stark

I first heard the author speak about this book two years ago at the Atlanta History Center and I am excited to finally get a chance to dig in. This story explores the connection and the similarities between William Henry Harrison and Tecumseh – both great historical leaders of their time.

The Second Story Bookshop
by Denise Hunter
Posting on Saturday, August 23rd
When Shelby’s grandmother opened her bookstore, it was a second chance at life – a second story. The store has always given second chances and new beginnings to anyone who has worked there. That doesn’t stop by Shelby’s grandmother passes away and leaves the ailing store to both Shelby…and the high school sweetheart her grandmother always hoped would win her back.
