With the end of May comes the beginning of summer, graduations, and pool parties! I’m ready for warm weather, sunny days, and getting to spend plenty of time outside without pollen! I’m also looking forward to visiting lots of independent bookstores around town. Do you have any fun summer plans?
This week, we are honoring our fallen military heroes and Memorial Day, as well as reading about an adorable rescue pup. We are also taking a look back at the books we’ve read in May and I’ll be sharing the June prompts to get ready for next month!
Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:

RWL Reading Challenge – Week 22: With a Military Character
Out of the Depths
by Edgar Harrell, USMC
Posting on Tuesday, May 27th
When the USS Indianapolis went down during WWII, the lucky sailors who evacuated the ship and survived the sinking spent several days treading water in the Pacific Ocean. Shark attacks, fatigue, dehydration, and starvation threatened to take out those survivors while they waited for someone to notice they were missing. This memoir of those scary days gives readers a first-hand look at what those brave men endured on the open seas.
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt:
- Bestseller: The Rose Code, Kate Quinn
- General Fiction: The Yellow Birds, Kevin Powers
- Romance: A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway
- Thriller: Eye of the Needle, Ken Follett
- Nonfiction: A Bridge Too Far, Cornelius Ryan

Sponsored Read – Week 22

The Goode Girls of Maple Lane
by Jacqueline Firkins
Posting on Saturday, May 31st
A veterinary student rescues a dog with medical issues and calls on her neighbor for help. That might seem like a friendly thing to do, but these neighbors haven’t talked before…not to each other, not to any of the residents in their building. Rescuing this dog does more than just pull these two together – it will pull together the entire community!
