Eve Dallas has made a name for herself in the NYPSD. She’s currently investigating a grisly double homicide but her attention isn’t fully on the case. Not only is she married to the hottest businessman in town, her best friend is also about to give birth and asked Eve to be her birthing coach. Between birthing classes and baby shower prep, Eve is way out of her element! When one of the baby shower guests goes missing and a connection is found linking the disappearance back to that double murder, Eve’s attention is fully focused on finding the criminal and keeping her friends safe.
Born in Death is the 23rd installment of the In Death series from J.D. Robb. Known for her romance books, Nora Roberts chose to write the futuristic law enforcement thriller series under the Robb pen name to separate these two worlds. While billed as a crime thriller, the author weaves plenty of romance and steamy scenes in between our favorite detective and her beau. Released in 2006, this book is set a few decades into the future and feels a bit like “The Jetsons” with crime scene and home automation technology that steps well into the future.

I give Born in Death 3 out of 5 stars. This was the first book in this series that I have read, and the rating may be higher if I had started with book 1 – I felt like I was missing some of the backstory needed to fully understand the characters. It was interesting reading a book set a few decades in the future but written 2 decades in the past. Some of the “advancements” in technology felt outdated and others still felt so far in the future. Some plot points felt forced and even less realistic than the new age crime scene technology. With that said, I know this is a very well received and supported series and I can see why – I would definitely be interested in reading more of these books!
With scenes of pregnancy loss, assault, kidnapping, and murder, I would suggest this book to more mature audiences over 16. If you are a fan of Nora Roberts’ other works, you will like this one, too. I’d also suggest this murder, crime, or mystery book clubs – there is so much to unpack around the actions of the various characters!
I chose Born in Death for the Read With Lindsey Reading Challenge prompt “With a Law Enforcement Character”. This prompt is in honor of National Police Week this week. I love police procedurals and thrillers and those make up a good number of the books on my shelves! Do you have a favorite series featuring law enforcement? I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments?
