April is a fun month in our house – both my husband and my son have birthdays later in the month, and there are lots of holidays to honor our library friends! My son’s favorite color is purple, which inspired our monthly color theme. Don’t forget our monthly theme can be taken as the color of the cover or as a title with the color in the name. Take a look at our prompts for the weeks coming up – what are you reading in April?

Over the past few years, we’ve read a few books that fit with this theme. Here’s the ones that received full reviews on the site:
- A Certain Kind of Starlight, Heather Webber
- Born Confused, Tanuja Desai Hidier
- Chocolate Wars, Deborah Cadbury
- The Color Purple, Alice Walker
- A Happier Life, Kristy Woodson Harvey
- The Secret Adversary, Agatha Christie
Looking for more? Here’s a few you might like:
Purple Covers
- The Giver of the Stars, Jojo Moyes
- Matilda, Roald Dahl
- Macbeth, Shakespeare
- What Once Was Mine, Liz Braswell
- Wicked Like Wildfire, Lana Popovic
Purple in the Title
- Purple Hearts, Tess Wakefield
- Purple Hibiscus, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
- Tolstoy and the Purple Chair, Nina Sankovitch
- The Woman in the Purple Skirt, Natsuko Imamura
What books would you add to this list?
I really wasn’t sure I’d find much purple music, but was pleasantly surprised! My first thought was “Purple Rain” which is where we start, but I found so many other great choices, including the soundtrack from the movie inspired by one of the books on list above! I also continued our trend of looking for our theme in other languages which brought some interesting options, too. Hope this will keep you inspired while you read!
