Casey’s role as “house mom” has always extended well past the doors of the home she shares with her brother and his friends. She’s always packing snacks for them, making sure they have water, and other supplies they need, and stay out of trouble. In return, these big burly guys keep an eye out for Casey, too – whatever she needs, they are there for her. But when all Casey wants is her first real kiss and chance at an adult relationship, she may be asking too much of her brother’s friends. Will one of them come through for her, or will this tear the house apart?
Released in 2023, Kilt to Order is best-selling author Susannah Nix’s first release in the Kilt Trip series. This somewhat slow-burn romance sees a few of our favorite tropes rolled into the pages of one novel – an athletic based romance, a hot fireman, a book nerd looking for love, and the brother’s friend. While the title and description lead readers to believe the book is based around Highland Games, they only make a minor appearance in the story with the book taking on more of a friends-to-lovers focus throughout. This is a book about the value of friendship and the dangers of dating amongst a small friend group over all.

I give Kilt to Order 4 out of 5 stars. While I liked this book, it was almost too far into the directly of a Hallmark movie. Drama and conflict between the characters is suddenly resolved with morally gray decisions suddenly being ok. The right people in the right places or able to get there just in time. It was a bit too manufactured for me and some aspects felt disjointed, like the look into some of the characters’ backstories. If it had stayed more on point with the Highland Games theme, it would have made a bit more sense for me. With that said, I did appreciate the way Nix used Casey’s intelligence as an attractive characteristic for her with the love interest.
Given discussions of sex and foreplay, this is a book I would recommend to audiences over 16 years of age. I would also caution readers who may have experienced difficult family relationships, parental loss, or bullying from reading this book. With that said, this may be a great girls getaway read – it is a quick read and a fun, light-hearted page turner!
I chose Kilt to Order for the Read With Lindsey Reading Challenge prompt By a Female Author. I haven’t read many of Susannah Nix’s works so far, but have loved her romance books. I thought this would be a great choice for March with it’s green cover. There are so many great female authors on my shelves though. Who are you reading this week?
