With recent news about the cancellation of government sponsored diversity programs, I want to call attention to how we can all bring diversity into our own lives – reading books by diverse voices. I set this week’s prompt to “books by African American Authors” in 2024 before I knew any of this was coming – February is Black History Month after all. But it feels fitting to have this prompt now as an Anglo reader who hasn’t experienced what life has brought these authors simply because of their skin tone. I hope you will join me in reading books by diverse voices in 2025, but especially right now as diversity is being shut down nationwide.
Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:

We Are Not Like Them
by Christine Pride & Jo Piazza
Posting on Tuesday, February 18th
At the heart of this story are two woman – one black, one white. Childhood friends, they live very different lives now. But when one unfortunate event brings them back together, it magnifies the differences in their lives simply because of their skin tone.
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt:
- Bestseller: The Color Purple, Alice Walker
- General Fiction: Real Life, Brandon Taylor
- Romance: You Should See Me in a Crown, Leah Johnson
- Thriller: Razorblade Tears, S.A. Cosby
- Nonfiction: Well-Read Black Girl, Glory Edim

by Pippa LaTour
Posting on Saturday, February 22nd
Pippa LaTour led a life full of tragedy and adversity. But that only strengthened her and gave her a fantastic background to prepare her for life behind enemy lines as a wireless operator for the British. This memoir comes 80+ years after her harrowing adventures, but will leave you on the edge of your seat!
