When I first started reading again as an adult, I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed a few genres like military/law enforcement thrillers, small town romance, and westerns. I’m pretty sure it all ties back to my childhood summers spent with my grandparents watching Gunsmoke and Bonanza or movies like McClintock! Not to mention my grandmother’s soaps! But whatever the reason, it made me love reading again – something I hadn’t felt since I started college. This week, I’m continuing a series I started a few years back – Lonesome Dove – to fill our “western” prompt and reading a romance for our US States challenge. What are you reading this week?
Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:

RWL Reading Challenge – Week 51: A Western
Streets of Laredo
by Larry McMurtry
Posting on Monday, December 16th
I chose Lonesome Dove for a reading challenge prompt a few years ago. I was on a work trip and listened to the audiobook on the plane and in the hotel that week and I loved it! I’m excited to read book 2 in the series this week!
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: True Grit, Charles Portis
- General Fiction: The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck
- Romance: Blizard of Love, Erin Wright
- Thriller: The Gun Slinger, Stephen King
- Nonfiction: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West, Dee Brown
- Kids: Old Yeller, Fred Gipson

US States Challenge – Week 51: Washington, D.C.
Heartburn
by Nora Ephron
Posting on Thursday, December 19th
Can you believe this is my first Nora Ephron book? What happens when a woman discovers her husband’s infidelity? Add on she’s 7 months pregnant, disaster seems to follow her, and it’s the 80s when none of this was really commonplace and you have quite the situation!
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: The Woman at the Washington Zoo, Marjorie Williams
- General Fiction: Digital Fortress, Dan Brown
- Romance: The Girl’s Guide to Love and Supper Clubs, Dana Bate
- Thriller: The Alex Cross series, James Patterson
- Nonfiction: Guest of Honor: Booker T. Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, and the White House Dinner That Shocked a Nation, Deborah Davis
- Kids: Capital! Washington DC from A to Z, Laura Krauss Melmed & Frane Lessac
