Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
Colt just saw a face he recognized, but from where? After serving overseas as a pilot, he’s met so many people in so many places. Colt calls after the man and starts to trail him out the casino doors when chaos erupts. He watches as masked men pour out of a cargo van and grab the man. Then gunfire fills the air from both the kidnappers and someone on the other side of the portoco he can’t see. Whoever this man is, it’s obvious he’s valuable to more than one party. Will Colt be caught in the crossfire or will he be able to help rescue the man from his captors?
Bogey Spades is the third book in the Battle Born series from Jack Stewart featuring Navy pilots and SEALs along side NCIS agents and a host of other military servicemembers. Pulling on his own TOPGUN training and service in Afghanistan and Africa, Stewart delivers realistic military characters and plot details an unexperienced author just couldn’t do. This book showcases the innovation and skill of these specially forces and is truly about the sacrifices these frontline teams take to keep us all safe from threats both seen and hidden.

I give Bogey Spades 4 out of 5 stars. This is the first book I’ve read by Stewart and I was not disappointed! The author brings the scenes and plot to life with vivid details and descriptions of the landscape and people. I did feel a bit lost in some areas because I haven’t read the first two installments in this series, but overall followed the plot without the need for additional information. The only other frustration I had was from the use of so many acronyms. For those of us who are civilians, we do not always understand specialized acronyms – I had to look things up more than once. Overall this book was a great introduction to a new author and cast of characters!
Readers who enjoy other military and police based thrillers like Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series or John Sandford’s Lucas Davenport works, you will enjoy this, too. With gun violence, death, espionage, and light references to sex, this novel would be best directed to more mature audiences over 16. This would also be a great bookclub choice with so many characters and events to unpack!
I was drawn to Bogey Spades initially for the cover – it looks so much like the recent Jack Ryan books. But I reached out for the chance to listen to this audiobook before it’s release because of the publisher’s blurb. I am excited to have found a new author in a genre I love so much and can’t wait to read the first two books in this series.
Bogey Spades hit bookshelves earlier this week – you can grab your copy in our Bookshop.org store!
