Tomorrow marks one of the most important days of the entire year to me – Veterans Day. I find it hard to wish someone a “happy Veterans Day” because the need to have veterans in the first place is a reminder that our world is not “happy”. I have been a long supporter of our armed forces and their families though – recent generations of these men and women have chosen to put their lives on the line for us every day. They put their goals and ambitions on hold in some cases to serve their country and many come home with injuries, both visible and invisible that will direct their lives forever.
This week, we are honoring our veterans by reading books with military characters. I chose the next in the Jack Ryan series which features both American and Russian military characters. If you are looking for ways you can support our veterans by more than just reading a book, I encourage you to visit www.VFW.org to find out more about the programs offered by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and help support their cause.
Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:

RWL Reading Challenge – Week 46: Military Character
The Cardinal of the Kremlin
by Tom Clancy
Posting on Monday, November 11th
If you’ve followed the site long, you’ll know that I love the Jack Ryan universe. When I realized I had this prompt coming up, my mind immediately went to the series. Each book usually features a military main character and a host of other “civil servants” and intelligence officers. Originally published in 1988, this book pulls on the battle between Russia and the US to be the first to accomplish science and space feats.
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: Band of Brothers, Stephen E Ambrose
- General Fiction: A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemmingway
- Romance: Great and Precious Things, Rebecca Yarros
- Thriller: The Jack Ryan series, Tom Clancy et. al.
- Nonfiction: Thank You for Your Service, David Finkel
- Kids: I Miss You!, Beth Andrews & Hawley Wright
