The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches

Mika has always been told to hide who she is.  She’s not allowed to use her magic and she can’t gather in groups with other witches.  She’s been an orphan nearly all her life because of a curse that takes magical parents away soon after their children are born.  So when an opportunity comes her way to mentor three young witches, she jumps at the chance to help them, but also to rebel.  When Mika arrives at the estate, she never expected what would happen next!

From the author of Lost Girl and Color Outside the Lines, comes a heartwarming tale full of magic.  Sangu Mandanna’s The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches follows three young witches, their magical mentor, and a host of nonmagical adults who form the perfect irregular family around them.  With themes of adoption and chosen family, as well as shared common grief, this is a book about embracing the life you’ve been given and finding joy in the little moments.

I give The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches 4 out of 5 stars.  This is a really cute story of rebellion and finding your place in the world with a fun romance.  This novel does take a different spin on witchcraft than in other popular fiction with a note that the witches aren’t allowed to gather together for fear their magic will draw too much attention.  However, I really enjoyed the way the non-magical characters supported the young trio and protected them the best they knew how.  Portions of the book did feel disconnected and a few of the characters could have been better developed, but this was a really enjoyable read!

Readers who enjoy young adult magic-based fiction will love this one.  If you’ve loved other coming of age magical reads like Practical Magic, this will feel like home for you, too.  I chose the audio version of this book and loved it!  Samara MacLaren has narrated several magical reads and I think you will find her performance outstanding!  Book clubs should consider this as well – there is so much to unpack with the trio of tiny witches and their adult family.

I chose The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches as my TBR read for October.  I’ve had this in my Audible library for a few months and I’m glad I finally got a chance to read it!  The magic and witchcraft made it a perfect read for the week of Halloween.  I hope you had a great holiday week and found plenty of time to read good books!
