Happy National Grandparents Day! I am so thankful for great grandparents, including a grandmother who instilled a love of reading in me. My grandmother was one of the first public school librarians in Fulton County, Georgia. She loved to read books aloud and helped me really connect with fiction through stories she created off the cuff for me. My favorite spot in her house was either camped out in the driveway listening to those stories, or in the foyer to their home where she kept shelves of books just for me (and near the piano, too!).
This week, we are reading books featuring grandparents in honor of the holiday to get started, but we are also looking at books about the other big historical moment this week – September 11th. Additionally, we are venturing to Oregon and reading the newest installment in the Potomac Shores series!
Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:

RWL Reading Challenge – Week 37: Grandparents
My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry
by Fredrik Backman
Posting on Monday, September 9th
I’m excited to be picking up another of Backman’s works this week! This one is a bit of a sad start, but I am excited to see where it goes. Backman has a way of writing about poignant moments in our lives we often take for granted or those times when we don’t have empathy for others and really making readers think about how they act.
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: When You Trap a Tiger, Tae Keller
- General Fiction: The Summer Book, Tove Jansson
- Romance: By Cook or By Crook, Maya Corrigan
- Thriller: We Were Liars, E. Lockhart
- Nonfiction: Displacement: A Travelogue, Lucy Knisley
- Kids: Stone Fox, John Reynolds Gardiner
Books for Patriots Day
Posting on September 11th
On the 23rd anniversary of the September 11th attacks, we will be looking at books centered around the attacks or with the events as a backdrop – both fiction and nonfiction.
US States Challenge – Week 37: Oregon
Where the Lost Wander
by Amy Harmon
Posting on Thursday, September 12th
I’m not sure what I was expecting when I picked out this book earlier this year….but I was a bit caught off guard. This is more about the journey on the Oregon Trail rather than set in Oregon, although it does end in the territory. If you liked the “Yellowstone” prequel “1883”, you might enjoy this book.
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey
- General Fiction: Winterkill, Craig Lesley
- Romance: Good Grief, Lolly Winston
- Thriller: A Merciful Death, Kendra Elliot
- Nonfiction: Listening for Coyote, William L. Sullivan
- Kids: Beezus and Ramona, Beverly Cleary
