Welcome to Temptation

Sophie has a quiet life filming wedding videos, but it hasn’t always been that way.  She’s from a family of grifters and conmen, including her two siblings.  But Sophie would do anything for family, so when her sister lands a job producing a movie in Temptation, Ohio, Sophie gets roped into helping out.  Little did they know their time in Temptation would be filled with chaos, lies…and murder.

Welcome to Temptation is the first novel in Jennifer Crusie’s Dempseys series, following the Dempsey siblings on their misadventures.  Crusie received several romance novel awards, including a few for the humor in the novel, too.  Featuring some very steamy scenes along with family drama and a murder mystery, Crusie builds the small town romcom with an emphasis on “rom”.  The underlying themes of this book are all about family ties, second chances, and learning who you can trust.

I give Welcome to Temptation 4 out of 5 starsLet me start by saying I had somehow missed this is a bit of a spicy romcom and was completely caught off guard at the first bedroom scene.  What really threw me off was how much this read like a “made for TV” script while having all the spice, too.  I also had trouble connecting with a few of the characters and were surprised by their actions in the final few chapters of the book.

Given the spice, I would direct this book to more mature readers over 18.  The writing wasn’t as explicit as some of the romance books we’ve read before, but the kink was definitely there.  IF you like small town murder mysteries, you may enjoy this book, too.

I chose Welcome to Temptation for the US States Reading Challenge prompt “Ohio”.  I was struggling to find a book that felt lighter than some of my more recent reads and this….well, it was definitely not so serious.  I will caution you if you choose the audio version like I did….earbuds in!  This is not the kind of book you want someone walking in to hear you reading at work!
