I made a commitment when I started this blog not to spend too much time on books that score lower than 3 stars so we could spend more time on the positive. In line with that commitment, today’s review will be shorter than our standard.

I give Downtown Owl 2 out of 5 stars. To be completely frank, if I hadn’t been listening to an audio version of the novel, I would probably be counting this amongst my small list of books I did not finish. Animal cruelty, teen sex, drug and alcohol abuse – all things I could have done without and would be triggers for some readers. While this book does have some shining moment like showcasing what life after the loss of a spouse looks like, the negatives outweigh them 10 to 1. While the author’s style was enjoyable, the content of this novel was not.
I chose Downtown Owl for the United States Reading Challenge prompt North Dakota. Set in a fictional town with some very real occurrences, I thought this would be a good choice for the prompt. However, there are some other works you should consider – check out Sunday’s weekly agenda post for some other ideas!
