You probably know the name Tina Fey from shows like Saturday Night Live or 30 Rock. Maybe you recently found out she is the mind behind the movie “Mean Girls”. But Fey is much more than just a comedic genius: a wife, a mother, and a woman conquering a man’s world in an industry yet to be wracked by the Me Too movement. Fey’s memoir Bossypants shares some of her most memorable moments on these shows, but also what could be called her origin story. Fey recounts her time in an improve troupe and shares advice with women from all industries on leading your team, being a good coworker, and learning to step outside your comfort zone.

I give Bossypants 4 out of 5 stars. I found myself connecting with Fey’s memories of her childhood and early adult life, as well as her time as a leader. I enjoyed the realistic look at being a parent – from balancing work and homelife to how to take a screaming toddler on a road trip, I feel like I’ve lived some of these tales myself! I also enjoyed the behind the scenes look at the making of her Sarah Palin impression – there was so much I had assumed incorrectly here!
If you love Tina Fey’s work on the screen or love SNL in general, you will love this book. She has included so many behind the scenes tidbits! I would caution against this book if her kind of humor is not your speed – this is a warning I shouldn’t have to include, but have found it necessary with some other recent posts. If you are looking for a motivational book or something specially on business leadership, this probably isn’t the best fit. But if you are wanting a book about how to balance it all and not go insane, this is a good choice!
I chose Bossypants for the Read with Lindsey Reading Challenge prompt “by a comedian”. This one has been on my TBR shelf for years now! I have long admired Tina Fey’s ability to poke fun at herself while still “getting it done”. This book reads like a master class in just that!
