A friend recently reminded me that sometimes we just need a good laugh to solve our trouble. It doesn’t always work, but a laugh can make a horrible day just a little bit better. I’ve read a few books recently that fall into this pattern and I’m excited to talk about them this week!
Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:

RWL Reading Challenge – Week 34: By a Comedian
Bossypants
by Tina Fey
Posting on Monday, August 19th
I have long admired Tina Fey for her work both on screen and off. As a mother, a woman in a male dominated industry, and a comedian, she is everything I always wanted to be…and haven’t always figured out on my own. This book is full of life stories and funny moments along the way.
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: Yes Please, Amy Poehler
- General Fiction: Shopgirl, Steve Martin
- Romance: Whatever Love Means, David Baddiel
- Thriller: Huge, Brent Butt
- Nonfiction: Born a Crime, Trevor Noah
- Kids: Dada, Jimmy Fallon
Reading for Laughs
Posting on August 21st
Since we’re focused on the works of comedians this week, I want to share some of the funny books that have gotten me through some tough times. I’ll share some books by comedians, but also some other just funny books that quite literally made me laugh out loud.
US States Challenge – Week 34: North Dakota
Downtown Owl
by Chuck Klosterman
Posting on Thursday, August 22nd
This novel is all over the place. Excessive drinking, teen bullying, dating, dealing with life after losing a spouse…and animal cruelty? Not to spoil the post later this week, but this is not a book I’d recommend if you’re looking for something set in North Dakota.
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: Love Medicine, Louise Erdrich
- General Fiction: Peace Like a River, Leif Enger
- Romance: Dakota Born, Debbie Macomber
- Thriller: Paradise Valley, C.J. Box
- Nonfiction: The New Wild West: Black Gold, Fracking, and Life in a North Dakota Boomtown, Blaire Briody
- Kids: Fly Away, Patricia MacLahlin
Rotating Posts – Week 34: TBR

How Y’all Doing?
by Leslie Jordan
Posting on Saturday, August 24th
I adore Leslie Jordan – his work on film and songs was the exact kind of southern charm that helped make it ok to be yourself….whomever that is! This one has been on my TBR list for a while now – so glad to get to laugh it out with Leslie thish week!
