I first heard Cassandra Good’s name earlier last year as she released First Family: George Washington’s Heirs and the Making of America, exploring the first American president’s family. That was just the latest of Good’s accomplishments in the field of American History though – she’s taught at several renown universities (currently Marymount University), released articles and participated in a plethora of panels and talks, and released America’s Founding Women on Audible in conjunction with The Great Courses. To say she is at the forefront of her field feels too weak of a sentiment. With a unique look at the female influence in the development of our country and political systems, Good brings the women behind the Founding Fathers into the spotlight to share their own struggles and thoughts about the events of their time.

I give America’s Founding Women 4 out of 5 stars. Similar to other nonfiction books I’ve read in my studies of our American presidents and their contemporaries, the biggest downfall of this book would be that it is not something I would necessarily share with my friends. With that said, this is a great place to start if you would like to learn more about the people our high school history books missed. It is well known that women simply were left out or relegated to the sidelines in the retelling of historical moments, but our accomplishments as an early nation would have been hindered without their input. Good tells their stories well in this release. I also appreciated that this feels more like a seminar on the topic rather than just a textbook read aloud.
I would suggest this as a great accompaniment to high school or college American History courses. As I mentioned, this is a great place to start if you are looking to learn more about the lesser-known figures in our history. This is a great read for all ages, too.
I chose America’s Founding Women for my August nonfiction read. Continuing with our walk through our early presidents, this felt like a great fit to cover so many of their contemporaries! Have you listened to this release yet? Share your thoughts below!
