The summer break seems shorter and shorter every year! Kids where we are will be going back to school in the next 2 week – when do yours go back? With the yellow busses and backpacks full of papers becoming routine again, I thought it would be fitting for Back to School to be our August theme!
Here’s a few books we’ve previously reviewed that fit well with our theme this month:
- All the Bright Places, Jennifer Niven
- Better Than the Movies, Lynn Painter
- The Getaway List, Emma Lord
- Kinfolk, Sean Dietrich
- Lessons in Chemistry, Bonnie Garmus
- Little Fires Everywhere, Celeste Ng
- Nineteen Minutes, Jodi Picoult
- Prep, Curits Sittenfeld
- Warriors Don’t Cry, Melba Pattillo Beals
- When Women Were Dragons, Kelly Barnhill
Do you remember the reading lists from school? Here are some of my favorites!
- Amelia Bedelia, Peggy Parrish & Fritz Seibel
- Anne of Green Gables, L.M. Montgomery
- Because of Winn-Dixie, Kate DiCamillo
- The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Island of the Blue Dolphins, Scott O’Dell
- James and the Giant Peach, Roald Dahl
- Little House on the Prairie, Laura Ingalls Wilder
- Matilda, Roald Dahl
- Miss Nelson is Missing!, Harry Allard
- The Odyssey, Homer
- Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
- Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier
- The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne
- Sideways Stories from Wayside School, Louis Sachar
- Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Judy Blume
- To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee
What books would you add to this list?
Thinking about a good mix of songs to fill the playlist this month led me to think about songs I’d like both as a kid and as a parent heading back for the first day. And, as a child of the 90’s, that also meant I immediately pictured some of my favorite movies set in schools like “10 Things I Hate About You” and “She’s All That”. Do you have a favorite movie set at a school? Also – there’s an Easter Egg in this list…the first song I ever sung in a musical! Can you figure it out?
