This is not the world Heather Wells thought she’d be in. As an assistant dorm director at a college in NYC, she deals with everything from emotional meltdowns of her residents to stopping their dangerous pranks to even protecting the dignity of the college president’s wife when she comes in drunk. A series of unfortunate events brough her to this point from her life as a teen pop sensation – her momager took off with all her money, her fiancé cheated on her, and her record deal got pulled. But she’s determined to make the best of the situation. That is…until students start showing up dead. Will she be able to keep things under control in the dorm, or will she be the next victim?
Meg Cabot may be best known for her series The Princess Diaries, but the Heather Wells series brings her characteristic humor and charm to the adult literature circuit. Part mystery, part romance, Size 12 is Not Fat is the perfect light read as we move into the back-to-school season. With a theme of women’s empowerment, this is the feel-good read women need!

I give Size 12 is Not Fat 4 out of 5 stars. This is definitely the kind of story I can see making its way to the screen in the future, but not in the Hallmark movie type of way. Similar to The Princess Diaries, this series has relatable female characters fighting against the mean girls and finding their own voice. The strength Cabot builds into the main characters in her books allows readers to connect well with these women and look up to them as they come into their own. I finished this book feeling like I wanted more of Heather and her beau, but also like this series is a bit silly like a TV Sitcom.
If you grew up with The Princess Diaries movies with Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, you will love this book. With some discussions of violence, alcohol abuse, and dangerous pranks, this would be best directed to audiences over 16. I would also recommend this series in whole to book clubs and girlfriend groups looking for a fun light read!
I chose Size 12 is Not Fat for the Read With Lindsey Reading Challenge prompt “with numerals in the title”. Finding a book that fit this prompt was not easy! But with this being my birthday week, I thought it was only appropriate to find something with numbers or ages in the title. After reading several heavy books recently, this was just the cute relaxing read I needed to refresh my brain!
