The Road Trip

The last time Addie saw Dylan was as he was leaving their flat after their argument.  That was months ago, but now, here they are, on the side of the road, staring at their respective cars after a crash.  They knew they might run into each other this week at their friends’ wedding, but not like this.  They have one operable car between them and 300 miles to go – can they fit all their luggage, themselves, plus his atrocious best friend, her breastfeeding sister, and a complete stranger in the tiny car and make it to the wedding on time?

Humor and cute romance are hallmarks of Beth O’Leary’s writing.  The Road Trip showcases O’Leary’s romcom writing with a cast of characters so relatable and humorous in their own right.  Like a mix between TV’s The Big Bang Theory and the big screen’s Mama Mia!, this book is a perfect, light-hearted summer read.  This is a novel about the power of forgiveness and love above all else, even the wishes of those closest to us.

I give The Road Trip 3 out of 5 stars. This novel was cute and funny, but left me scratching my head.  I saw a few small errors in that had no material impact on the story, and the writing left it easy to visualize the scenes, but this is a novel that could easily translate into a cute 1-hour TV movie in all the worst ways.  It felt contrived and cheap at times – great for a distraction after some heavy reading, but it will leave you wanting more.

This would be a great choice for a light weekend or getaway read.  I would also recommend this if you like the two productions mentioned earlier – The Big Bang Theory and Mama Mia!  However, if you are looking for something with a little more substance, this may not be the best book for you.  I would recommend this book for readers over the age of 13 given some discussions of drinking, drugs, and sex.

I chose The Road Trip for the Read With Lindsey Reading Challenge prompt “road trip”.  It was the first book that popped up when I searched for something with that theme and I thought it would be perfect!  When I read on vacation, I tend to like thrillers like something from the Jack Ryan series rather than something light and airy like this.  What do you like to read on road trips?
