With the Independence Day holiday this week, a lot of us are thinking fireworks and barbeques, but it’s also the official halfway point for our reading challenge! The Read With Lindsey 2024 Reading Challenge had 52 prompts – have you been reading along with us? In honor of the holiday, this week’s prompt is for a book set in colonial America, and we’ve got some great suggestions below!
Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:

RWL Reading Challenge – Week 27: Set in Colonial America
Call Upon the Water
by Stella Tillyard
Posting on Monday, July 1st
This book feels like a trip back to the 17th century. An engineer from Amsterdam is working in England to build irigation channels and dams. He falls for a local woman only for her to be shipped as an endentured servant to the colonies for the crime of destroying some of his work. This is an interesting take on the prompt as the colony in question ends up being the Dutch colony of New Netherland and the settlement on Manatus Eyland (Mahattan Island).
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: The Last of the Mohicans, James Fenimore Cooper
- General Fiction: The Scarlett Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne
- Romance: Magic Lessons, Alice Hoffman
- Thriller: The Constable’s Tale, Donald Smith
- Nonfiction: American Colonies, Alan Taylor
- Kids: A Journey to the New World, Kathryn Lasky
