It’s day 2 of a 3-day holiday weekend here, and I’ve been spending so much time reading! We are also preparing for tomorrow’s celebration by talking about some friends and family who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. There are some great events happening around town, including events at our National Cemetery. Are you spending your Memorial Day weekend with a good book? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:

RWL Reading Challenge – Week 22: About World War II
The Greatest Generation Speaks
by Tom Brokaw
Posting on Monday, May 27th
I originally wanted to read Brokaw’s book The Greatest Generation, but this one felt like the better read for the holiday weekend. This is a compilation of letters Brokaw recieved after the publication of the original book. It is World War II veterans and their loved ones talking about their service overseas, the trauma they had experienced, and the impact the original book had on them. This was such a powerful read!
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: The Book of Lost Names, Kristin Harmel
- General Fiction: The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society, Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows (full review here)
- Romance: The Ship of Brides, Jojo Moyes
- Thriller: War of the Raven, Andrew Kaplan
- Nonfiction: Code Name Madeline, Arthur J Magida
- Kids: Number the Stars, Lois Lowry
Graduation Themed Reads
Posting on Wednesday, May 29th
With graduation just occurring or coming up in the next few weeks, we’ll be looking at graduation themed reads, and great books to gift to our young adults as they start out on their own.
US States Challenge – Week 22: Michigan
Poisoned Water
by Candy J Cooper & Marc Aronson
Posting on Thursday, May 31st
I can’t think of Michigan without thinking about Flint and the water crisis. I thought I had understood what happened, but this book showed me how much I missed in the news stories. This book documents the corruption of the government officials, the shear idiotic mistakes that compounded the trouble, and the absolute hopelessness the citizens of Flint really felt while fighting for clean water.
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: Station Eleven, Emily St John Mandel
- General Fiction: The Women of the Copper County, Mary Doria Russell & Cassandra Campbell
- Romance: The Time Traveler’s Wife, Audrey Niffenegger
- Thriller: The Marsh King’s Daughter, Karen Dionne
- Nonfiction: Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant, Curtis Chin (full review here)
- Kids: Mackinac Bridge, Goria Whelan & Gijsbert Van Frankenhuyzen
Rotating Posts – Week 22: TBR Stack
The Gutsy Girl Handbook
by Kate White
Posting on Saturday, June 1st
I’ve had this one on the shelf for while so it’s nice to get it off the TBR stack! This feels like personal mentoring session by a great female business leader. With that said…it is geared towards women just starting out.
