As we near the end of May, we’re also nearing the end of the school year and the academic careers of so many students. Do you have a graduate this year? Our eldest graduated high school last year and moved into an off-campus house with friends for this upcoming school year! This week, we’re reading books set at a college or high school in their honor.
Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:

RWL Reading Challenge – Week 21: Set at a College or High School
Prep
by Curtis Sittenfeld
Posting on Monday, May 20th
This book is set at a boarding school in Massachusetts, so it’s a great fit for either this prompt, or our state prompt this week! I fell in love with Sittenfeld after reading Eligible – the rethinking of Pride and Prejudice. I can’t wait to share the full review of Prep with you!
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: White Noise, Don Delillo
- General Fiction: Wonder Boys, Michael Chabon
- Romance: The Rules of Attraction, Bret Easton Ellis
- Thriller: The Secret History, Donna Tartt
- Nonfiction: The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College, Harlan Cohen
- Kids: What is College?: College and Career Readiness for Elementary Students, JR Henry Kopia Keculah & Lakeem Wilson

US States Challenge – Week 21: Massachusetts
Baltimore Blues
by Laura Lippman
Posting on Thursday, May 24th
I thought this was going to be more about a beach…and summer. I was not expecting the espionage and Cold War battles! This is a great historical fiction with some romance and mystery built in!
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood
- General Fiction: The Rules of Magic, Alice Hoffman (full review here)
- Romance: Writers & Lovers, Lily King
- Thriller: A Beautiful Place to Die, Philip R Craig
- Nonfiction: Walden, Henry David Thoreau
- Kids: Little Women, Louisa May Alcott

I am a huge Kristy Woodson Harvey fan and this book does not disappoint! If you love Mary Kay Andrews, you will love this author, too. A daughter tasked with selling her family property comes face to face with her family’s history.
