There’s No Coming Back from This

Poppy Lively is just a single mom trying to provide for her daughter who is about to head off to college.  Unfortunately, the IRS has something to say about that.  After her accountant defrauded her business of nearly all her money, Poppy is facing bankruptcy and desperate to find a well-paying job to make a dent in what she owes and is taking advice from the IRS agent who took pity on her.  As her daughter heads off to a summer job, Poppy is left feeling lost and alone, so when she runs into the guy that got away who offers her a job working on his latest movie, she’s seeing dollar signs….and feeling their love connection again.  Will they reconnect for good, or is one just using the other?

Bestselling author Ann Garvin is back with her latest book – There’s No Coming Back from This.  Garvin delivers unexpected romance, mystery, team bonding, and a behind the scenes look into what it takes to make it in Tinseltown.  Never afraid to tackle big topics, Garvin looks at topics like bankruptcy, workplace bullying, loss of a child, and substance abuse.  This is a book about friendship and remaking yourself when it all comes crashing down.

I give There’s No Coming Back from This 4 out of 5 stars. I liked this book, but it was missing that special spark to set it over the top.  I loved the characters and am hoping there might be a sequel so I can spend more time with them.  However, this felt like a bad Hallmark movie overall – one of those where you can predict the next scene and it’s just too syrupy sweet and perfect.  It needed more grit, more drama of a different kind than just an old lover and some workplace chaos.

With discussions of drug and alcohol abuse, along with romance, this book may be best directed to audiences over 13.  This would be a quick weekend read for a getaway or even a great girlfriend group read.  I would also recommend this for a book club read – there’s a lot to unpack here!

I chose There’s No Coming Back from This as my TBR Stack read.  I received this one as an Amazon First Reads last year, but hadn’t made time to read it yet.  It felt appropriate to read this one in May given our monthly theme about Moms.  What good books do you have in your TBR stack that would fit the prompt?
