How are we already at the end of the month again? What big plans do you have for May – there are a lot of events coming up! Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, maybe graduation? We will be celebrating Moms this month, but this week in particular, we’re starting with the Battle of Puebla, aka: Cinco de Mayo!
Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:

RWL Reading Challenge – Week 18: Set in Mexico
No Country for Old Men
by Cormac McCarthy
Posting on Monday, April 29th
In honor of Cinco de Mayo, we’re reading books set in Mexico. Ok – so this skirts that prompt a bit…it’s set on the Texas/Mexico border and is only partially set in Mexico through the narrative. I have never seen the movie so this was completely fresh to me when I started it. McCarthy’s style reminds me of Larry McMurtry’s in Lonesome Dove!
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: Caramelo, Sandra Cisneros
- General Fiction: Terra Nostra, Carlos Fuentas
- Romance: Like Water for Chocolate, Laura Esquivel
- Thriller: Desert Flowers, Paul Pen
- Nonfiction: The Distance Between Us, Reyna Grande
- Kids: Dear Primo: A Letter to My Cousin, Duncan Tonatiuh
April Recap

We will take a look back at the books read during April, and a sneak peek at the ones coming in May!
US States Challenge – Week 18: Louisiana
The Secret to Hummingbird Cake

Posting on Thursday, May 2nd
If you’re looking for a great girlfriend read – this is it! These friends stay true to each other through relationship drama, infertility, and terminal illness. Full of humor and a realness of true life experience, this book was a bit of surprise for me!
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: A Confederacy of Dunces, John Kennedy Toole
- General Fiction: All the Kings Men, Robert Penn Warren
- Romance: Midnight Bayou, Nora Roberts
- Thriller: The Pelican Brief, John Grisham
- Nonfiction: Creole, Sybil Kein
- Kids: I Spy in the Louisiana Sky, Deborah Kadair
Rotating Posts – Week 18: Nonfiction
The Patriots
by Winston Groom

I am finishing up my reading about our third American President – Thomas Jefferson. This was an interesting read covering not only Jefferson, but all three early presidents and some of their contemporaries. I am excited to move on to reading about James Madison in the next few weeks!
