RWL Reading Challenge – Week 6: Set in New Orleans
The Thread Collectors
by Shaunna J. Edwards & Alyson Richman
Posting on Monday, February 5th
It is the season for Carnival, which culminates next week on Mardi Gras, so I am getting in the spirit by reading a book set in New Orleans! This book is primarily set in the city, but also includes scenes in the North and fields of battle across the country. I heard about this book last year when looking for a New Orleans read. I found the premise interesting – it discusses the Civil War from the seldom told perspectives of a Jewish family fighting on both sides of the battle, and a concubine slave and her enslaved beau who runs away to join the Union. I think you’ll like this one!
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Best Seller: The Seamstress of New Orleans, Diane C. McPhail
- General Fiction: A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams
- Romance: Interview with a Vampire, Anne Rice
- Mystery/Thriller: Lethal, Sandra Brown
- Nonfiction: Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How it Changed America, John M Barry
- Kids: Nancy Drew: The Mardi Gras Mystery, Carolyn Keene
February Theme

What else would our February theme be but…romance! Wednesday’s post will include our playlist for the month along with a great selection of books and resources centered around romance.
US States Challenge – Week 6: Colorado
Woman of Light
by Kali Fajardo-Anstine
Posting on Thursday, February 8th
This award-winning book absolutely rocked my soul. Part western, part indigenous epic, part family drama, part small-town prejudice – this book has it all. If you’re looking for a western novel or one with a person of color as the main character, this is a great option. Fajardo-Anstine is a respected voice in Denver with several of her stories taking place in the area.
Here’s some other great books that would work for this prompt in popular genres:
- Bestseller: Smart Women, Judy Blume
- General Fiction: The Bookseller, Cynthia Swanson
- Romance: Snapped, Alexa Martin
- Thriller: The Shining, Stephen King
- Nonfiction: The Emerald Mile, Kevin Fedarko
- Kids: A Kid’s Look at Colorado, Phyllis J Perry

I was asked to read this book by my new team at work. It’s a quick read, but so very insightful! If you’re in any kind of leadership position, you should read this book!
