Open Carry

U.S. Marshall Arliss Cutter and his team were called in to help investigate the disappearances of three people in a remote Alaskan fishing village.  Arliss is still getting his footing in his new role after moving across the country from Florida to help support his family, but this assignment calls on his training as a diver, and his roots in a law enforcement family.  When the situation turns dangerous, he gets help from some unlikely citizens to solve the case and bring the criminals to justice.

Open Carry is the first installment in Marc Cameron’s Arliss Cutter series set in Alaska where the author has lived for many years.  Known for his previous series starring Jericho Quinn and his contributions to the world of Jack Ryan, Cameron lets his own law enforcement background shine in this new series.  This book is really about putting your trust in the right people and relying on your community when emergencies happen.

I give Open Carry 5 out of 5 stars.  I really enjoy law enforcement thrillers and have read several of Cameron’s novels, including his most recent installment in this series Cold Snap.  His unique knowledge of laws and procedures gives depth and authenticity to the storylines.  Cameron connects the readers to both the characters and the scenes with beautiful descriptions – it feels like this novel was meant to appear on a screen in the future!

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy law enforcement thrillers like I do.  If you enjoy Jack Ryan novels, this is definitely the book for you.  If you also enjoy workplace drama, you might enjoy this novel – the conversations between the teammates had me giggling and realizing how similar my own workplace friendships were to Cutter and his team.

I chose Open Carry for the U.S. States Reading Challenge prompt “Alaska”.   While I was gifted an ARC of Cold Snap, I picked up the first three books in the series at our favorite local used book shop last year but hadn’t found the chance to get started on them yet.  I was excited to get the chance to read Open Carry this year and will be looking for the opportunity to work in the other two in the series in later months!
