Earlier this year, I was gifted a copy of Mark Manson’s Everything is F*cked. First impression? What must my friend think of my life?? Second impression? Not another Mark Manson book…
Last September, I read Manson’s first and more popular book The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck and was highly disappointed. It was a one star read for me and I almost didn’t finish. When I started Everything is F*cked, I had a feeling I’d be adding this to my very short list of books I didn’t finish this year, but I powered through. Honestly, I skim read most of it because I just couldn’t get in to it!

I give Everything is F*cked 3 out of 5 stars. I can see where he was going with this one. I get it. But he attacks religion and belief systems throughout. There’s a whole multi-part section about what a scam religion is and even relates it to the MLM schemes. Once you read the part about how he became an atheist as a kid, it starts to make more sense, but still – don’t attack my religion. I will say that several paragraphs in his book felt like he was discussing a former US president directly – that was interesting.
If you’re a fan of Manson’s other works, you’d probably like this book, too. If you didn’t like The Subtle Art, don’t bother with this one – it’s really more of the same. When considering who this book might be best targeted towards, my best answer would be a younger crowd. Possibly college-aged young adults who are less religious and more concerned with the state of the environment? It’s really hard to tell who will respond well to this type of “self-help” book.
I chose Everything is F*cked as my November Self Development read – it’s the book in this category that has been on my shelf the longest and I’m determined to make a dent in my TBR stack! This will also likely be my last self-development read of the year as I get ready for the 2024 reading challenge schedule. What’s your favorite self-development book you’ve read this year?
