If you work in the American job market, chances are you have talked with the Human Resources department. While they were meant to be available for coaching and training, most of us avoid the HR professionals in our buildings because they are known as the voice of layoffs, write ups, and firings. This is the world Laurie Ruettimann operated in for years. Now a Human Resources consultant and job coach, Ruettimann delivers valuable life and career advice in her book Betting on You.
Ruettimann’s knowledge and experience walks readers through all aspects of employment from preparing for a layoff to interviewing for your next position to negotiating a better employment offer. Utilizing the experiences of a multitude of people, including herself and her clients, the author shows the pitfalls of some of the common choices people make when they feel trapped in a dead-end job. She also shows how making small changes can reinvigorate your drive and help you find happiness in the work place.

I give Betting on You 5 out of 5 stars. I can’t believe I found another self-development book that earns top rank again! The advice in this book is valuable for people in all stages of employment – job seekers, new employees finding their place in the organization, long-term employees burned out on corporate politics, and managers looking to inspire the best in their teams. I left the book inspired and ready to tackle my own employment challenges.
This book would be great for any reader in the corporate work environment. I would especially recommend this read for those who are less than inspired at work and those looking for new opportunities. I would also recommend this for managers and HR professionals – while most of this advice seems common sense, in my own experience, managers and HR professionals don’t usually follow these directives.
I chose Betting on You for October’s self-development read. I received this in a women’s leadership subscription box last year and had held on to it. I am in my own era of employment growth and new opportunities – this book was just what I needed to read right now! It has helped me build my personal growth plan, find small steps to build towards that goal, and the courage to ask for more. I am excited to put these topics into practice and see where they lead me!
