Agenda: Week of October 22nd

It’s spooky season – are you reading any great books for this time of year? I’ve got prompts that bring to me 3 out of 4 of the Practical Magic series books to finish out the series (I read Practical Magic last year). I’m posting my first review of this trio on Saturday – Alice Hoffman is definitely one of my favorite authors! I’ll also share my thoughts after another author event for a new cookbook – Latinisimo (I’m hoping there’s a reception with food samples like that biscuit reception a few weeks back for Still We Rise!).

Here’s the books I’m looking forward to discussing with you this week. Grab your copies of these books by clicking the images below:

A Man Called Ove

by Fredrik Backman

Posting on Monday, October 23rd

Prompt: A Five-Star Read

This book has made a splash with all my book groups! You may be familiar with the movie adaptation staring Tom Hanks called “A Man called Otto”.

Peter Stark discussing Gallop Toward The Sun: Tecumseh and William Henry Harrison’s Struggle for the Destiny of a Nation

I was at the Atlanta History Center this past Thursday to hear the author discuss his book and the lives of Tecumseh and Harrison. This was an amazing conversation and I can’t wait to share all the details!

Betting on You

by Laurie Ruettimann

Posting on Thursday, October 26th

Prompt: October Self Development

I read this one while on a work trip earlier this month and LOVED it! It’s a quicker read – I only read it on my flights and while at the airport and finished it in about 4 hours. Written by a HR professional, this one comes with lots of practical advice and actionable steps to help you in your work environment.

Sandra Gutierrez discussing Latinisimo: Home Recipes from the Twenty-One Countries of Latin America

Last year as a senior, my eldest had to bring a dish from a Latin American country to Spanish class for a feast. We were assigned arepas, which I’m still not sure we know how to make! I’m excited to hear this author speak, but just as excited to look at her arepas recipe…and the tres leche cake recipe, too!

Magic Lessons

by Alice Hoffman

Posting on Saturday, October 28th

Prompt: a bewitching book

This is the origin story for the Owens family we all love from Practical Magic. It goes back to the time of the Salem Witch Hunts in the 1600’s and is classic Alice Hoffman. The novel was nominated for several awards and is full of “healing witch” recipes and remedies based on folklore and well-known homeopathic remedies.
