Daisy Jones & The Six

Daisy Jones & The Six is a critically acclaimed novel that has hit the small screens with it’s own Amazon Prime miniseries.  It has been raved about since it’s publication and was an instant best seller.  Taylor Jenkins Reid is known for her best-selling books, like Carrie Soto is Back and Malibu Rising.  I had great expectations of this novel, however…I don’t understand the hype.

I give Daisy Jones & The Six 3 out of 5 stars.   This book felt frustrating to read.  Partially written as a documentary, the dialogue swaps between characters quickly and sometimes with just a line per person.  The narrative feels like a reality TV “confessional” or diary entry and becomes cringeworthy at times.  I also felt the excessive drug use and sex throughout the book became verbose and distracting from whatever the storyline was trying to accomplish.  The book felt familiar until I realized it is very similar to “Almost Famous”, the movie released over 20 years ago.  I did enjoy the big reveal of who the writer was, but even that felt too familiar – almost like the Lady Whistledown reveal in “Bridgerton”.

If you love Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Knicks, you might love this book – it’s loosely based on the story of the band.  If you’re in the recording industry or have followed it in the past, you might also enjoy the book.  However, with an abundance of drug use and sex, this is a book I would not recommend for readers under 18.

When I came across the Booklist Queen Reading Challenge prompt “recommended on TikTok” I wasn’t sure what to do – I tried TikTok earlier this year and didn’t really like it.  I did find a list of books recommended on the platform and chose this one since it’s gotten such great hype.  This is one of those times when this book isn’t my cup of tea, but it might be yours.  As I’ve written before, not every book is for every reader.  You may really enjoy the book (I hope you do!).  If you think I’m off base with this review, tell me why in the comments – maybe I missed something that made you love it.
