New Release Tuesday – 6/13/2023

Happy New Release Tuesday! We’ve got some great fiction books, thrillers, memoirs, and kids books on our curated list for you today. Don’t forget – you can use the links below to grab your copy of these great new books from our Bookshop.org page. Every purchase supports independent bookstores nationwide (we receive a small commission from these sales as well).

A Most Tolerant Little Town: The Explosive Beginning of School Desegregation in America by Rachel Louise Martin – most of us have heard of the Little Rock 9, or the school desegregation in Alabama, but I don’t think I knew Clinton, TN, is home to the first school desegregation in the south. Clinton Highschool integrated in 1956 with around a dozen students. Author Rachel Martin interviewed around 60 townspeople to put together a story full of the typical acts seen around desegregation in the 50’s and 60’s, and also intrigue and a scary mystery most of the town would rather have forgotten.

Beyond This Harbor: Adventurous Tales of the Heart by Rose Styron – this star-studded memoir from poet and humanitarian Rose Styron is destined to be a classic. From her famous neighbors and friends to her relationship with her husband Bill, Styron holds nothing back. If released 40 (or even 20) years ago, this book would have lit Hollywood and the American political scene on fire with scandal!

Decades of Decadence by Marco Rubio – DISCLAIMER: I don’t agree with the statements made in this book necessarily…while I agree that America has lost sight of what made us the envy of the world, I’m not sure statements like we have “been eroded not only by globalization, but by the lies we tell ourselves, including, ‘Anyone who loves each other is a family,'” will ring true long-term. Community is important and it is the one thing we seem to be pulling away from, but a family can be any number of characteristics…not just genetics.

Inside Threat by Matthew Quirk – Have you been watching The Night Agent on Netflix? Then you might like this latest release from the same author! An attack on the White House, a conspiracy theory, and a dedicated G-man. This is the triller for the summer!

The Cafe at Beach End by RaeAne Thayne – this one might be my summer beach read! This is the 5th installment in the Cape Sanctuary series and sure to be a great read. Full of family drama, personal scandal, and a little romance thrown in, Thayne’s writing is often compared to Debbie Macomber’s and is always a pleasure to take in.

The Five-Star Weekend by Elin Hilderbrand – when Hollis’s life is turned upside down by the death of her husband, she arranges a Five-Star Weekend – a getaway with a friend from each decade of your life. However…things don’t go exactly to plan and it’s not the movie-worthy girls weekend she was hoping for.

The Spectacular by Fiona Davis – confession time…I have The Magnolia Palace on the docket to read in July. It’s taken me so long to get to that Davis has a new book out now! The Spectacular is set against New York City in it’s prime. Radio City, The Rockettes…and the Big Apple Bomber. Part historical fiction, part thriller, this sounds like an amazing book. I’ve enjoyed seeing Davis’ Instagram posts revealing some of the research she did for this book!

Kids’ Books releasing today

Hattie Harmony: Opening Night by Elizabeth Olsen, Robbie Arnett, and Marissa Valdez – movie star Olsen and musician Arnett are releasing the latest in the Hattie series today! When the school play is about to start, Hattie and her friends all have a case of the nerves. Good thing Hattie can help calm their stage fright!

Show and Tell by Rob Biddulph – this hilarious picture book will help kids understand it’s not what you have, but who you are and your creativity that matter! The teacher awards a price for the most awesome thing brought to show and tell…and the kids let their imaginations shine!

Where Wildflowers Grow by Hà Dinh and Bao Luu – this book follows Dinh’s childhood story leaving Vietnam, living in the refugee camp, and eventually heading to America. With moving season for my military friends here, and so many others around the world, this is a very timely book to show that the fears your child might have are perfectly normal. From not knowing the customs or the games, to struggling with the language, to trying to make friends – this book covers it all.
