New Release Tuesday – 5/2/23

It’s New Release Tuesday! Being the first of the month, there’s quite a few on the list today – some great kids’ books, a few great biographies and memoirs, and some interesting fiction releases. What are you adding to your bookshelf today?

Homegrown by Jeffrey Toobin – this remarkable new book follows the legacy of Timothy McVeigh from the Oklahoma City bombing through the January 6 Riots. Toobin is an acclaimed journalist and uses his skills to uncover previously unreleased documents, videos, and photographs, and marries them with interviews from prominent figures like President Clinton.

Live Learn Love Well by Emma Lovewell – if you Peloton, you know the name Emma Lovewell! This memoir recounts her journey growing up middle class in a very rich city, and finding peace with her heritage. While we know her for physical wellness, Lovewell focuses on mental wellbeing in this book as well.

Summer on Sag Harbor by Sunny Hostin – I know Hostin from her roll on The View on ABC, but had no idea she’s a writer, too! This is the follow up to her previous release Summer on the Bluffs and follows a woman’s path to find herself. It also follows the hope to keep an ethnic community whole and undisturbed on the coast after it’s discovered by a real estate developer who is determined to change things.

Tell Me Everything by Minka Kelly – Known for roles on TV and movies, Kelly is releasing her first book – a memoir about growing up with a single mom. Kelly recounts some of the challenges they faced throughout her upbringing, including her mother’s addictions, and follows her journey to reconnect with her very famous dad.

The Island Villa by Sarah Morgan – Two girls are on the way to their mother’s fourth marriage. Each is showing up with predisposed notions of what the weekend, and their mother, will be like. Full of family drama and mother-daughter conflict, this is giving me the feel of the Mama Mia! movies!

The Secret Book of Flora Lea by Patty Callahan Henry – I am currently waiting on a copy of this one from a GoodReads giveaway. It has been the hit of all my book groups! The story follows a woman who lost her sister during WWII. She receives a package one day containing a book – the made-up world from the story she used to tell her sister! It makes her wonder: is her sister really gone?

Winnie and Nelson: Portrait of a Marriage by Jonny Steinberg – Nelson Mandala is one of the most prominent political figures in the 20th century worldwide. However, his political and humanitarian legacy is often overshadowed by the relationship with his wife Winnie, a political leader of her own accord. These two forces took very different approaches to battling apartheid, which took a toll on their marriage.

Kids’ Books releasing today

Be You, Little Monster! by Sandra Magsamen – This is a great new book for the littlest readers! Presented as a board book with plush monster ears, the story walks through all the wonderful parts of Little Monster that make it unique. It’s a great book to show kids being different is ok.

The Firefly Summer by Morgan Matson – Ryanna’s mom passed away a few years ago and she hasn’t heard from her grandparents since the funeral. But they just wrote and asked her to spend the summer with them. She’s expecting a quiet summer getting to know her grandparents, but quickly finds out there’s so many relatives around! This is a great middle grade read for kids from divorced or departed parents – it will show that there’s two sides to many stories, and everyone has different memories of events.

The Sun and The Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro – if you love Percy Jackson, you will love this book! Demigods Nico and Will are getting their own storyline in this new book! This is a bit of a coming of age story, with a focus on a relationship tested by circumstances out of their control, while also testing their ethics. It promises to be a great read for your mid to high school students.
