Thank you to Kensington Publishing, GoodReads, and Marc Cameron for sending this book my way through a GoodReads giveaway! All thoughts below are my own.
Arliss Cutter is a recent transplant to the Alaskan wilderness from the much warmer climate in Florida. A US Marshall, he’s an expert tracker and gunman, but he carries the pain from the loss of his brother and more than one broken marriage. When Arliss and his partner Lola Teariki are called in to track a man accused of attacking a jogger, it’s only the start of long fight to bring a serial killer to justice. An extra Cold Snap of the weather and some wily criminals brings a heavy dose of danger, drama, and dilemma to the operation.
Cold Snap offers vivid imagery drawing on author Marc Cameron’s personal experience in law enforcement and living in Alaska. The details given about the businesses and landmarks in each city give the scenes reality and truth. This story runs several law enforcement operations which appear to be separate from the start but shows the true nature of many investigative situations that inevitably cross paths.
I give Cold Snap 5 out of 5 stars. Cameron is a master of crafting law enforcement storylines, and this novel is no exception! The way he intertwines the personal relationships of his characters with their workplace challenges reads as though it is destined to land on the big screen. The only factor that detracted from the story for me were a few of the more gruesome scenes details death in the back country.
This novel is the fourth in the Arliss Cutter series but is the first I’ve read and can be a standalone read. As with any book based on law enforcement, this novel contains descriptions of weaponry and death that may be disturbing to younger audiences. There is a minor theme around drug dealing and use as well. I would recommend this book to readers 16 and over, and those looking for a great read to curl up with on a cold or wet weekend. If you enjoy the Jack Ryan series, you will love this book!
I won Cold Snap in a GoodReads giveaway from Kensington Publishing and the author. I am excited to be introduced to a new series by Cameron, who is quickly becoming my favorite author. I originally found his works through the books he’s contributed to the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan series. This novel was a weekend read for me, and probably could have read it in one day if I’d had the uninterrupted time. I was quickly gripped by the story line and can’t wait to read the first 3 books in the series, along with the new 5th installment that was just released. I know you will love this book as much as I do!
